Combat BasicsTargeting, crits, elements, monster ranks, and the rules that shape every fight.

Combat in Skybound is click-to-fight with two skill buttons. Under the hood it’s fully server-resolved: damage, hit chance and crits are all decided by the server, so nothing you see is faked. Here’s how to fight well.

Targeting & attacking

  1. Pick your target

Left-click a monster to select it: a cyan reticle appears. Or tap Tab to lock the nearest one within 80 units.

  2. Engage

Click the selected monster again. Your hero walks into weapon range and the reticle turns red; you’re now auto-attacking.

  3. Swing & mix in skills

Auto-attacks land on their own; press 1 and 2 for your two combat skills. Every hit, and every miss, is resolved by the server.

  4. Watch your reach

Your weapon sets the range: bow 22 units, wand/staff 18, yo-yo 5, all melee 2.8. Close the gap or you’ll swing at air.

◉ Live capture
Target, close, swing: the whole loop, with the damage the server rolled.
Any swing, hit or miss, pulls a monster’s attention. If you tag an aggressive creature or a nearby pack, expect to be chased. Bosses and Giants are aggressive on sight from further away.

Hit, miss & critical hits

Hit chance is a contest of your hit rating (driven by DEX and level) against the monster’s evasion, clamped between 20% and 96%; you’ll never be locked out, but a big level gap costs you accuracy. Critical hits come from DEX: 1% base + 0.4% per point of DEX above 15, capped at 50%. A crit deals ×1.5 damage and has a 30% chance to knock the monster back.

Damage scales with your level, gear and attack stat. Auto-attacks and power skills grow +8% per level; learnable skills grow +5% per level of the character, and each skill also gains power as you rank it up.

The five-element wheel

Every weapon and most monsters carry an element. Hitting a foe with the element it’s weak to deals extra damage; hitting into a resistance deals less. The wheel: each element beats the next:

🔥FIRE 🌪WIND ⛰️EARTH ELECTRIC 💧WATER

Each element beats the one it points to.

  • Fire scorches Wind
  • Wind erodes Earth
  • Earth grounds Electricity
  • Electricity conducts through Water
  • Water douses Fire

So Fire beats Wind, Wind beats Earth, Earth beats Electricity, Electricity beats Water, and Water beats Fire. Weapons can be element-upgraded up to +10, and Channelers can simply choose the right elemental spell for the foe; a real damage lever once you learn each zone’s creatures (listed in the Bestiary).

Monster ranks

Any species can appear at one of five ranks. Higher ranks are tougher and far more rewarding, but only Giants and Bosses hit back harder or have real defense; the rest are just bigger XP.

RankHP ×XP ×Damage ×How to spot it
Normal111Plain name, no aura
Captain2.631“Captain” prefix, a small crest/flag, warm tint, 1.3× size
Mutant341“Mutant” prefix, toxic-green glow
Giant55705.5“Giant” prefix, huge (2.3×), amber aura, always aggressive
Boss1201609Unique name, 2.9× size, pulsing violet aura + crown, always aggressive
Bosses fight back. Expect a telegraphed ground-slam every ~8 seconds (a red warning ring, ~4.5-unit radius, ~1.5× damage; dodge it, don’t tank it) and an enrage below 30% HP (+40% damage, slams more often). Giants and bosses are the big XP piñatas, but they’ll drop you if you’re careless.

The level-gap rule

To keep you hunting at-level, monsters below your level pay reduced XP. At or above your level, you get full XP; the further below, the steeper the cut; down to a 20% floor:

Monster is below you by…0 (or above)123456789+
XP multiplier1.00.90.750.60.450.350.280.240.210.2

The practical takeaway: don’t farm grey trash. Move up the level bands with your character. On server-owned zones, attacking a monster far beneath you is even blocked outright with a “No challenge” note (the roaming Catchers are exempt: anyone can hunt those).

Stacking XP bonuses

Party

+25% per extra member who damages the kill (up to 8). Two hunters share 125% of every kill.

Weather

+10% in rain, +15% more in a storm. Watch the sky before a grind.

Rank

Captain ×3, Mutant ×4, Giant ×70, Boss ×160. Seek out the big ones.
